Therapy for Couples on the Brink (Discernment Counseling)
When one partner is leaning out and the other is leaning in, traditional couples therapy can feel mismatched. Discernment counseling is a short-term, structured process (up to five sessions) designed to help you decide—with clarity and confidence—whether to try reconciliation, separate, or pause and decide later. Sessions include time together and one-to-one conversations with me so each partner can be fully honest about needs and concerns.
What makes Discernment Counseling Different from Regular Couples Therapy?
You will come in as a couple but the most important work occurs in the one-to-one conversations with the therapist. Why? Because you are starting out in different places.
Number of Sessions: A maximum of five counseling sessions. The first session is usually two hours and the subsequent are 1.5 or 2 hours.
The therapist emphasizes the importance of each of you seeing your own contributions to the problems and the possible solutions. This will be useful in future relationships even if this one ends.
When is Discernment Counseling NOT a good fit?
When one spouse has already made a final decision to end the relationship
When one spouse is coercing the other to participate
When there is danger of domestic violence
